Pricing
How much does a pedicab ride cost in San Diego?
A Power Chariots ride costs a flat $20 per person to anywhere in our downtown San Diego service area, including the Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, East Village, the Convention Center, Seaport Village and the North Embarcadero. Guided tours cost $40 per person (30 minutes), $70 (60 minutes) or $95 (90 minutes). Every fare is posted and prepaid, so the price you see before you book is the price you pay. Full price guide.
Why do people search for "pedicab scam"?
Because most downtown pedicab fares are negotiated at the curb, and visitors regularly report hearing a surprise total, sometimes $10 to $20 per block or per minute, only after the ride ends. Power Chariots was built to end that. Every fare is posted online, paid in advance and locked before you sit down. Nothing is negotiated and nothing changes at drop-off.
Is the price per person or per chariot?
Per person. Each chariot seats up to six riders, and larger groups get as many chariots as they need. The per-person fare stays the same.
Can the driver charge me more at the end?
No. The fare is paid and locked before you ride. The only thing you can add at the end is an optional tip, which goes 100% to your driver.
Do I need to tip?
Tipping is optional. The posted fare covers the ride in full, and if you do tip, 100% of it goes to your driver.
Do pedicabs take cash or card?
Power Chariots is cashless. Rides are prepaid online by credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through Square's secure checkout, and you get an email receipt and a trip record for every ride.
How the industry works
How does the pedicab industry work in San Diego?
Every pedicab driver in San Diego is licensed by the city, but drivers are not employees of a pedicab company. Each one is an independent contractor who rents a pedicab from a fleet company, such as San Diego Pedicabs, Elite Pedicabs or VIP Pedicabs, and runs a fully independent small business: their own prices, their own card processing, their own bank account. The fleet company leases the vehicle and the driver keeps the fares. Power Chariots is the booking layer on top of that system. We post the fare in advance and only match you with drivers who are city-permitted, insured and pass our internal qualifications. How pedicab pricing works.
Who sets the price when I hail a pedicab on the street?
The driver does, individually. Because every driver runs their own business, a street hail typically costs $30 to $100 per person depending on the time of day, how busy it is and the driver, and the total sometimes comes up only when the ride is over. Two riders on the same block can pay very different prices for the same trip. When you book through Power Chariots, the fare is posted and prepaid, so the price is guaranteed before you sit down.
Booking & riding
Can I hop on a chariot I see on the street?
Yes. Scan the QR code on any Power Chariot, pick your destination, pay the posted fare and go. No app download needed.
Can I book a pedicab in advance?
Yes. Choose "Schedule" when you book and pick your date and time. Booking ahead is a good idea for game days, convention weeks, weddings and groups.
Can I cancel and get a refund?
Yes. Cancel up to 15 minutes before pickup for a full refund. Cancellations inside 15 minutes and no-shows aren't refunded. If we cancel for weather, safety or an equipment problem, you get 100% back. Full details are in our refund policy.
What happens if it rains?
We ride rain or shine. If we ever have to cancel your ride for weather, safety or an equipment problem, you get a 100% refund automatically.
How many people fit in a pedicab?
Each Power Chariot seats up to six riders, roughly double a standard pedicab. Groups larger than six ride in multiple chariots together at the same per-person fare.
Are kids allowed?
Yes. Kids under 5 ride free on a lap. Child riders count toward the six-rider capacity per chariot.
Safety & trust
Is pedicab service safe in San Diego?
Yes, when the operator is city-permitted and the drivers are trained. Power Chariots is operated by VIP Pedicab, which has run city-permitted pedicabs in San Diego since 2008. Our drivers are trained, uniformed and held to written safety and conduct rules, and every prepaid ride comes with an emailed trip record, so there's always a record of who drove you, when and for how much.
Coverage & events
Where do you operate?
Anywhere in our downtown San Diego service area: Little Italy, the North Embarcadero, the Gaslamp Quarter, East Village, the San Diego Convention Center, Seaport Village, Sherman Heights and Barrio Logan. We run daily from 11am to 2am, with extra chariots on game days and convention nights. See the service area.
Do you serve Padres games and conventions like Comic-Con?
Yes. Petco Park and the San Diego Convention Center are both inside our service area, and we add chariots on game and event days. For Comic-Con and other large conventions, book in advance. Demand peaks when sessions let out.
Can I hire a pedicab for a wedding or private event?
Yes. You can reserve one chariot or the whole fleet for a set time: ceremony-to-reception shuttles, hotel loops for conventions, bachelor and bachelorette nights, and festival shuttles. Guests ride free between venues and you get one quote up front. Request a quote through our events form.
